The nventory project targeted the formation of the European Infrastructures Observatory, a single-entry-point, one-stop-shop data warehouse, geographically addressing EU Member States, while being expandable for global coverage, capable of representing žInfrastructure benchmarks and exhibiting European žInfrastructures achievements for networking, supercomputing and grids, while being expandable to emerging žInfrastructures, through intuitive, interactive and user-friendly visualisation interfaces to allow for progress monitoring and impact assessment of žInfrastructures at regional and national level across the European Union and beyond.

The nventory project carried out extensive consultation with Infrastructures stakeholders and individuals experts, along the lines of engaging with an active Advisory Board and consulting with key European ežInfrastructure projects (e.g. EGI-Inspire, PRACE, GN3, etc), žInfrastructure policy bodies (e.g. TERENA, e-IRG), fellow projects and initiatives such as MERIL, e-Infranet, EuroRis-Net, ERINA+, and other organisations as well as individual experts. It extended prior benchmarking efforts (e.g. the EARNEST foresight study) by including an extensive set of Infrastructures components (i.e., computing, communication and services), eventually deploying a prototype web platform dealing with a critically-selected subset of indicators, through an intuitive, interactive and user-friendly visualisation interface.
